Thursday, December 10th, 2009 marks the 61st anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in which Article 25 recognizes that, “Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family.” This right includes “medical care.” In the United States, healthcare is not a right but a privilege. Over 45,000 people die annually in the United States because they lack access to healthcare. 47 million people are uninsured and another 50 million are underinsured because of the skyrocketing costs of healthcare. The current bills in the House and Senate do not recognize healthcare as a human right, will not make healthcare affordable and will not guarantee that all can receive needed medical treatment. We need a system that prioritizes patients, not insurance industry profits, and guarantees health care for everyone. We need a single-payer, Improved Medicare For All system.
